Slot Canyoneering in Utah’s Escalante area

WOW slot canyoneering in Utah’s Escalante area has the most spectacular scenery yet total serenity — there was noone else in sight all day. We learnt to descend on ropes and a range of manoeuvres to creep, slide and wriggle through the narrowest of canyons at ‘Egypt 1’ – a slot canyon accessed from outside the little town of Escalante.  This is part of a massive area of 1.9 million acres that stretches from the Grand Canyon to the middle of Utah called the Grand Staircase Escalante. It’s an incredible series of canyons, mountains and even forests amidst the desert, with hues of red, white and golden sandstone all around. Just to show how little visited the area is, the walk out of the canyon is through phenomenal waves of sandstone cliffs — an area that  hasn’t  even been named! There are so many amazing places here, which, in the UK would be major protected parkland’s, yet in Utah they are so commonplace this exit canyon from our slot canyon didn’t even have a name! So the guys called it Caroline’s Crack! I won’t take it personally.
